How to plan your perfect destination wedding

Date:

With romance in the year and Valentine’s day only a day away – it may also be time to explore the future possibilities in love like ‘The perfect wedding.’ Many of the Millenial couples want to make their wedding a talk of the town by taking the alternate route or a unique style of presenting themselves as man and wife. Some prefer to bring grandeur and romance in true filmy fashion with over the top decor and catering, lavish wedding set ups, investing in the perfect couture for the big day or even going the very intimate old school way without the pomp and galore.

Destination weddings are not only limited to celebrities and are increasingly catching on a trend for the new age lovebirds. Here are a few tips and questions you need to address if a destination wedding is on your mind.

Time, date and venue

First things first, the most important questions need to be addressed – in any wedding scenario, that is. Time of the year, the dates that you want to complete this union and the location. There are many locations in India and abroad alike that can be explored and thanks to celebrities, Italy and Rajasthan have become the favourites. You can try exploring the south side and do a beautiful wedding in Kerala along the backwaters or even the beaches of Gokarna or Puducherry.

Budget –  To hire a wedding planner or not?

Once the big questions are addressed and along with the location, the budget comes into place. The budget can be pre-decided and it actually can be a tight one even though the idea is of a destination wedding. You can keep it an intimate gathering of only family and friends. It is a myth that wedding planners are extremely expensive, you can customize and decide upon your budget and then hire a planner to arrange everything in the same. Most planners have a huge network of vendors who can be assigned to a wedding with any budget.

Important aspects while choosing a location

You need to check the accessibility of the location, do prior bookings to stay given the number of the people who will need a place to sleep in, accessibility of a vendor, caterer and decorator and all information about nearby places and so on.

The theme

Destination weddings present a huge canvas to play around in terms of theme. In case you plan to have a royal wedding in Rajasthan, the theme and the food can reflect royalty. In case it is a beach wedding, then the colours can be breezy and soft – white tones, light blue, light green and peach for example. While for a say mountain wedding, the colours can incorporate nature and the idea can be a little rugged. The theme needs to go with the location to highlight the beauty of the locations. Some destination themed weddings can also be tailored and customized keeping your likes and common links of the couple in mind. In case the couple has a common interest like films – one of the party themes could be a ‘Bollywood night party’ or ‘Dress as your favourite film character – Cocktail party.’ The idea is to plan and add special events in the card or E-invite.

The wedding invite/card

The invite could follow the theme of the location and the colours – which would make it different. You can add a dress code and the colour theme in the invite itself for the guests to plan their travel better.

Food

The idea is to keep the food with a holistic flavour and one can also add local dishes and cuisine to the food menu.

A list of things to carry

It would be a great idea to send everyone a list of things to carry and share the itinerary for the wedding with the guests. They can plan and prepare themselves for the travel with ease.

Hampers and gifts

You can customize your hampers for the guests – according to the theme or the season. The winter wedding hampers can include gloves, miniature alcohol bottles. Summer weddings can include sunscreen, hats, portable fans. A monsoon wedding hamper could have things like raincoats, hand towels and small umbrellas. The gifting options can also include some local varieties and local specialities.

Other tips

Keep things in plenty and find local stores around the venue.

Delegate and distribute responsibilities – what are bridesmaids and best man for if not to help out in making your big day a success.

Carry a good team of photographers and videographers with aerial drones to make the wedding video look spectacular.

Planning in advance saves the trouble for last minute misses and panic situations and lastly don’t forget to have loads of fun.
