Court grants divorce to couple via WhatsApp video call

A Nagpur based couple took divorce through WhatsApp video call as the wife lives in the US and the husband is in India. The court has granted them divorce and settlement of Rs. 10 Lakhs. The wife’s consent for the divorce came through video call.

The husband aged 37 years is a resident of Khamla in Nagpur and works in Michigan, but at the time of divorce, was in his hometown. His 35-year-old wife is currently in Michigan pursuing her studies on a student visa.

As the wife could not get a long leave from her institution, she had to miss the court hearing, she requested for the hearing to be conducted over a WhatsApp video call.

Upon the consent from both sides, Swati Chauhan, the Nagpur Family Court Judge granted them separation on one condition that the husband would pay Rs. 10 Lakh at once as alimony to the wife. The final hearing took place on January 14 after the consent from the wife.

The couple got married in Secunderabad in January 11, 2013 in an arranged setup and both husband and wife got jobs an automobile company based out of Michigan in the US.

The conflicts arose when the wife had to stay with her in-laws alone in Nagpur after the expiry of her US visa. With time, the differences widened and the husband filed the divorce at the Nagpur Family Court. The divorce case was turned into a mutual consent petition prior to marriage getting dissolved.
