Top Bollywood movies to look forward to in 2019

2018 came as a surprise for Bollywood lovers, with small budget movies making huge success at the box-office. It was evident that it was more about good content and stories in 2018 and less about high-budgeted films starring Bollywood A-listers.

A number of non-mainstream actors, such as Ayushmann Khurrana, Vicky Kaushal, Rajkumar Rao, Radhika Apte, Bhumi Padnekar, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui made their presence felt in the industry with their strong and powerful performances in various films that were loved equally by both, critics and the audience.

The Hindi film industry is surely growing up and with an exciting line-up of films that are to be released this year, 2019 can even be the potential game-changer for Bollywood. From some much-anticipated biopics to political thrillers that have already sparked controversy throughout the nation, here are some of the upcoming movies that we cannot wait to watch.

  1. Uri

Release date – 11 January

The film is based on the 2016 surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army after the Uri Base Camp in Jammu and Kashmir was attacked. A glorious tale in Indian’s military history, with Vicky Kaushal playing the lead, Uri promises to begin our year with a bang.

  1. Manikarnika

Release date – 25 January

Kangana Ranaut has time and again proved herself to be a promising actor with her power performances. This biographical drama will see the actress playing Jhansi’s warrior queen, Rani Laxmibai. The film will also be Kangana’s directorial debut.

  1. Cheat India

Release date – 25 January

The film focuses on the malpractices in the Indian education system, from rigging examinations to forging certificates. Starring Emraan Hashmi, ‘Cheat India’ will also be the first release of his production house, Emraan Hashmi Films.

  1. The Accidental Prime Minister

Release date- 11 January

The Accidental Prime Minister is based on the book of the same name written by Sanjay Baru. It is based on the life of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The film sparked many controversies as soon as its trailer was released as it talks about the former PM’s tenure and the Gandhi family.

  1. Thackeray

Release date- 23 January

The film is based on the life of Balasaheb Thackeray, the founder of right-wing political party ‘Shiv Sena’. The bilingual biographical will be released in both Hindi and Marathi. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, the film one of the most anticipated films of the year.

  1. Kesari

Release date- 21 March

A war drama directed by Anurag Singh, Kesari is about the battle of Sarhagarhi, where 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra.

  1. Gully Boy

Release date- 14 February

A Zoya Akhtar directorial, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, Gully Boy is a musical drama. Exploring the underground scene in Mumbai, the film is said to be loosely based on the lives of rappers Divine and Naezy.

  1. Mental Hai Kya

Release date- 29 March

Starring Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Rao this film is an adult comedy and crime thriller. Being promoted as ‘crazy is the new normal’, the film aims at celebrating the imperfections and craziness within us.

  1. Super 30

Release date- 25 January

Another biopic, Super 30 is based on the life of a Patna-based mathematician Anand Kumar and stars Hrithik Roshan. Kumar runs a ‘Super 30’ program for underprivileged IIT-aspirants in Patna. By 2018, 422 out of 480 students that he tutored made it to the IITs. The film will also be Hrithik’s return to the big screen after a break of two years.

  1. Bramhastra

Release date- 20 December

A Dharma Production, Brahmastra will be a sci-fi drama directed by Ayan Mukherji. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna. The film is the first part of a trilogy which will reportedly be completed over a span of 10 years.
