The Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated on December 7 in India in order to manage the welfare of the country’s defence including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. In the year 1949, a committee was set up under the leadership of the defence minister on August 28 in which it was decided to observe the date December 7 as Flag Day.

To honour the bravery of the martyrs including the men and women of the defence forces, this day is a reminder of our obligation towards the retired soldiers, war widows, disabled men, and the minors of those who lost their lives while fighting for the integrity of the country to keep us safe.

  • The Flag Day Fund was formulated in the year 1949 by a committee formed under the Defence Minister.
  • The collection of the fund is collected through voluntary organisations by official and personal means.
  • The Kendriya Sainik Board manages the fund collection throughout the country.
  • Armed Forces Flag Day is celebrated as an honour to the army, navy, and air force of the country and has now become an important tradition.
  • The day is celebrated through shows, carnivals, plays and dramas, and other entertainment programmes in which all the three branches of the armed forces showcase their talents.
  • Each year, 60,000 defence personnel take retirement of above 40 years of age, in order to keep the existing personnel strong and fresh.
  • Around 11.00 AM, a two-minute silence is observed throughout the country as a tribute to the martyrs.
