Every year in winter, Rann of Kutch in Gujarat comes alive with vivid and vibrant colours and themes. The Rann festival is one of the biggest festivals of Gujarat spanning across three months.

The dates for this year’s festival are November 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019. These three months are the chilliest months across the year and the desert looks the best in this season.

The Rann festival demarcates the unique culture of Gujarat with festivities and fun-filled activities such as dance and music performances, storytelling sessions, desert walks, mind-blowing displays of handicrafts, and local, authentic and delicious food tasting of the state.

  • In the festival, the best talent of Gujarat is showcased through blissful music among the white sand. Breath-taking performances under the moonlight, and traditional music and culture is at its best around this time.
  • A desert safari in Gujarat is a must when you are visiting the state for the Rann festival for a birds-eye view of the desert from the top. For all age groups, there are special activities such as hot air balloon rides for families and a variety of activities for kids.
  • While you are in Gujarat during the festival, you must visit the local villages and interact with the local communities of the state. Explore and meet the local talented artisans for traditional handicrafts and workshops. You can also purchase beautiful handicrafts and showpieces from the villages to take back home.
  • The Rann festival or Rann Utsav is basically held at the Dhordo Village in Kutch which is 80 kilometres north of Bhuj. The nearest airport and railway station to the village is in Bhuj from where cabs can drive you till the venue. Private coaches also ply on the roads from Maharashtra and Gujarat to Bhuj which can be used to reach Rann.
  • The best way to enjoy the festival to by staying at the festival venue in the Swiss tents that have wooden carpets and spectacular rooms that overlook the desert. Other options are of course, the hotels and guest houses nearby the venue or in nearby cities.
