Japanese Princess gives up title to marry commoner

The Japanese Princess Ayako has tied the knot with a commoner at Tokyo’s Meiji Shrine with all rituals and traditions and in lieu of getting married, she has given up her royal title.

She is the daughter of Emperor Akihito’s late cousin and according to reports, she will receive 106 million yen from her state after getting married to 32-year-old Kei Moriya who works with Nippon Yusen, a major shipping firm.

The wedding ceremony was held in a building that resembles a pagoda in the Meiji Shrine complex in which the rings were exchanged, the couple shared a cup of sake. These rituals form a part of the Shinto-style weddings which are also common among the Japanese.

Ayako carried a Heian-era style hairdo and a traditional Japanese wedding robe adorned with red and green patterns and her beau was dressed in coattails.

The payment of 1.3 million Dollar was decided to be given to Princess Ayako upon her wedding so that she could maintain her high standard of living after giving up her royal title and status.
