PM launches Ayushman Bharat scheme; All you need to know

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, launched world’s largest government-funded healthcare programme – the Ayushman Bharat from Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi.

“We have to fulfill our long cherished goal of “सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः।सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।” within this century and today is an important and valuable begining towards that,” He said at the launch of Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana.

“1300 diseases including serious health conditions like heart & liver ailments, cancer, tuberculosis are covered under Ayushman Bharat. PM JAY gives insurance coverage up to 5 lakh for in-patient treatment, outpatient treatment and medicine cost” Prime Minister Modi added.

Here are all the things you need to know about the scheme

  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyan (PMJAY) will have around 10.74 crore families are beneficiary under the scheme.
  • Each family will get a cover of Rs 5 lakh. All families listed in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) database as per defined criteria will be covered irrespective of the family size and age of members.
  • For Rural area, following families are eligible to avail the scheme:  families having only one room with kucha walls and kucha roof; families having no adult member between the ages of 16 years and 59 years; female-headed households with no adult male member between the ages of 16 years and 59 years, disabled members and no able-bodied adult member in the family; SC/ST households; and landless households deriving major part of their income from manual casual labour.
  • For the urban areas, the 11 occupational criteria will determine entitlement. These categories of workers include rag pickers, beggars, domestic workers, street vendors, cobblers/ hawkers/ other service providers working on streets, construction workers/ plumbers/ masons/ labours/ painters/ welders/ security guards/ coolies and other head-load workers and sanitation workers.
  • The beneficiaries can avail free treatment at all government and some listed private hospitals.
  • To avail benefits under the scheme, you need to provide just one ID proof. It could be Aadhaar card or election ID  or any other government ID proof.
  • In the case of hospitalisation, the family members do not have to pay any money for the treatment.
  • One can visit the website mera.pmjay.gov.in or call up the helpline (14555) to check their enrolment.
  • The schemes will be implemented in 31 states and Union Territories who have signed MoUs. Other states and Union territories like Telangana, Odisha, Delhi, Kerala and Punjab have not signed The MoU, so the scheme will not be implemented in those states till they come on board.
