In what could be a shame to humanity and motherhood a case emerged in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri district last week where a stepmother allegedly had a nine-year-old raped and murdered by the girl’s stepbrother and three others.

After being raped she was attacked by them with an axe, her eyes were gouged out and acid was poured on her body, police said. The stepmother allegedly planned her murder as she didn’t like her husband getting involved with his other wife, according to the police.

The nine-year-old girl’s mutilated and decomposed body was found in the forests of Boniyar in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district and among the nine accused are her stepbrother and stepmother, said the police on Thursday.

The girl went missing on August 24 and all the attempts to trace her failed by her family. Baramulla’s senior superintendent of police (SSP), Imtiyaz Hussain said as police recorded the statement of her father, it was found that he has two wives, one from a nearby village and another, who is a non-local and hails from Jharkhand. The missing girl was the latter’s daughter.

After the girl’s decomposed body was found in the nearby forests, a kilometre away from her home, an examination of the scene of crime, made it seem like a murder and police proceeded accordingly.

“On a fateful day, she (stepmother) took her stepdaughter to the nearby jungle and was armed with a sharp-edged knife. While she was on her way to the forest area with her stepdaughter, she signalled her son (stepbrother of deceased from the same father) aged about 14 years to be ready for the commission of the crime,” Hussain said.

“The probe team has seized all the murder weapons and a plastic can containing acid from the spot,” he added. The police officer said a charge sheet will be filed at the earliest to proceed with the investigation.
