Parliament disrupted over UP, Bihar ‘horror houses’; guilty will not be spared, says Rajnath Singh

Date:

The Parliament was disrupted over Muzaffarpur, Deoria shelter home sexual abuse cases on Tuesday, the fourteenth day of the Monsoon Session, with the Opposition staging a walkout from Lok Sabha during Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s speech.

Describing the Deoria incident as shameful and unfortunate the Singh said that guilty won’t be spared. The Opposition objected when he thanked the Yogi Adityanath government for taking swift action following reports of sexual abuse of teenage girls at an illegal shelter home in Deoria.

“Yogi government should be congratulated for taking immediate action in the case. Concerned officials were suspended. The couple running the shelter home were arrested and the probe was handed over to senior most officials,” Rajnath Singh said triggering an uproar from the Opposition benches.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that standing committee should be formed to run checks on shelter homes across the country.

Congress, Samajwadi Party, NCP, RJD and TMC MPs later staged a walkout from the House over Rajnath Singh’s statement. Opposition MPs also held a protest outside the Parliament complex and demanded resignations of both UP CM Adityanath and his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar.

SP MP Dimple Yadav, who is the wife of the former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, was seen holding a placard which read ‘Implement slogan of Save Girl’ and raised slogans against the BJP-led governments in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh over the safety of women.

Meanwhile, in a latest development in the Deoria shelter home sexual assault case, police have arrested Kanchanlata, daughter of Girija and Mohan Tripathi, the couple which used to run the shelter home.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Women and Child Welfare Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi sought to blame the previous governments for the horrific case and said Opposition parties should refrain from taking political mileage out of it.

“It was either negligence or connivance, it will be decided when the reports come in. CM is monitoring this. He is very firm that those responsible will not be spared,” Joshi told reporters during a press conference in Lucknow.

On Sunday several leaders from the Opposition such as Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav held a rally at Jantar Mantar in the national capital to protest against the Muzaffarpur shelter home alleged rapes.

The alleged Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case has put Nitish Kumar government in Bihar under the spotlight. So far, 11 employees of the shelter home have been arrested and 44 girls rescued. The prime accused is Brajesh Thakur, with alleged ties to ministers in the state government. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken charge of the case now.

In the Deoria shelter home case, the Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday arrested a couple and rescued 24 girls from there after an inmate escaped and informed the police about the alleged ill-treatment meted out to them. However, 18 girls from the home are missing.
