FACT CHECK

Well, there is no need to panic as the Facebook-owned messaging platform is not rolling out any such feature and government is not reading your chats.

In addition, the FAQ page on WhatsApp clearly states:

“Your messages are secured with locks, and only the recipient and you have the special keys needed to unlock and read your messages. For added protection, every message you send has a unique lock and key. All of this happens automatically: No need to turn on settings or set up special secret chats to secure your messages.”

Following are the steps to ensure that the chat is end-to-end encrypted:

Step 1 – Open the chat with any contact.
Step 2 – Tap on the name of the contact so that the contact info screen opens.
Step 3 – Tap Encryption to view the QR code and 60-digit number.
Step 4 – Scan the other person’s QR code if both of you are physically nearby. You can also visually compare the 60-digit number.
Step 5 – If you can scan the QR code, and the code is indeed the same, a green check mark will appear.
Step 6 – If the QR code matches, then the messages or calls are encrypted and cannot be intercepted by anyone.
