Be warned! Slime is making children ill, research

Date:

Brightly colored, sticky and gloopy ‘slime’ that sludges through hands and splats everywhere, has entertained and kept children occupied for decades. However, new research has found that slime toys contains dangerous levels of a chemical that can make children ill.

Boron, found in the Borox compound, is a common ingredient that helps to create the sticky texture. In the European Union its use is limited to 300mg/kg, but a new investigation has found that eight out of eleven tested contain dangerous levels of boron.  “Long-term exposure to the chemical can cause harm to an unborn baby and infertility” said the European Commission.

According to BBC report, Nikki Stopford, Director of Research at Which? (a consumer’s association) has said “If you have school-age kids you’re probably very well aware of the latest slime craze sweeping the playgrounds. Kids love it. Parents buying slime for their children should have peace of mind that these toys are safe, so they will be shocked to find that the health of their children could be put at risk by these slimes. There must be fundamental changes to the product safety system. Manufacturers must stop making unsafe products and the government and retailers simply have to do a far better job of getting anything identified as a risk off the shelves and out of people’s homes.”

The products found with above the recommended 300mg/kg level of boron were:

  • Fluffy Slime (pink) by CCINEE
  • Crystal Slime Magic Clay (pink) by Cosoro Dodolu
  • Mini Bucket Putty (green) by Baker Ross
  • Slime Toy (purple) by iBase Toy
  • Fluffy Slime (blue) by LOYO
  • Brezeh Free Slime Toy (orange) by Brezeh
  • My Fluffy Slime (green) by Virtuotrade

All of them were sold by Amazon. Amazon spokesperson reportedly feels that all marketplace sellers must follow selling guidelines and those who don’t will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The products in question are no longer available. chemicals,
