“Every player should get a golden ball in Sweden. What they did will be remembered forever. Thank you for the show,” the striker tweeted.

The Sweden team was not fancied before the tournament, despite knocking out Italy in the qualifying play-offs, but exceeded expectations in Russia by getting out of a group at expense of reigning champions Germany, and beating a skilled Switzerland team in the second round.

The team’s fairy tale was cut short in Samara on Wednesday by an England team on its journey of destiny.
