Nipah Virus: One more death reported, death toll rises to 14

Trivandrum: With one more death reported in Calicut on Sunday, the death toll in Kerala due to Nipah virus has risen to 14.

The state’s health department had issued a travel advisory, earlier in the week, urging travelers to be extra cautious while visiting Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur districts.

A similar note of caution was issued by the Himachal Pradesh’s health ministry on Thursday after more than 18 dead bats were discovered on the premises of a government school in Nahan, triggering a panic among locals.

For the unversed, Nipah virus is a communicable disease spread by fruit bats and is fatal for both animals and humans.

The symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, drowsiness, respiratory illness, disorientation and mental confusion.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), these signs and symptoms can progress to coma within 24-48 hours.
