Harvey Weinstein released on $1M bail, charged with rape, sexual misconduct

Date:

Hollywood mogul an Oscar-winner, Harvey Weinstein, who was arrested on charges of rape, was released on $1 million bail with constant electronic monitoring and a ban on traveling beyond New York and Connecticut.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) charged the Hollywood producer with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct from encounters with two different women.

He was granted bail of $10 million including property, or $1 million in cash. He opted to pay $1 million in cash, it is reported.

Reports stated that the judge also imposed a temporary protective order directing Weinstein to stay away from the two women whose complaints prompted the charges. The case was adjourned to July 30.

Scores of women have come to fore and accused the 66-year-old of a wide array of misconduct, which ranges from harassment to rape, over decades.

Weinstein had turned himself in to the NYPD to face the charges before the court order. More than 50 women, including stars like, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd and Angelina Jolie, accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, which the former has denied.

According to sources, “Weinstein is expected to be charged with preying on Lucia Evans who told investigators that the former forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004.”

The case was probed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and New York City Police Department. According to sources, evidence related to Weinstein’s possible financial fraud was also presented before the jury.

The lawyer of the embattled filmmaker, Benjamin Brafman dismissed the charges against his client, saying, “they are constitutionally flawed.”

“We’ll dismiss the charges. They are constitutionally flawed and not supported by evidence.

Weinstein voluntarily surrendered today and we have met all of the bail conditions by agreement so that we would not have extended court proceedings,” said Harvey Weinstein’s Attorney Benjamin Brafman.

“I anticipate that women who made these allegations, when subjected to cross-examination, the charges will not be believed by 12 people, assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that has overtaken this case,” the attorney added.

However, maintaining his innocence, Weinstein, whose career has been left in tatters, has always denied non-consensual sex.
