For Bihar’s leader, Nitish Kumar, this will the first electoral test since he left a ‘mahagathbandhan’ with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress last year.

The Gorakhpur by-election result will perhaps be the most anticipated one. That’s the constituency Yogi Adityanath represented in the Lok Sabha before he became Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister.

But then again, elections in Uttar Pradesh are always closely watched. After all, the state, India’s largest by population, accounts for a whopping 80 Lok Sabha seats, making it the most prized asset on the national poliitical chessboard.

Upendra Dutt Shukla contested from Gorakhpur for the BJP, and Kaushalendra Singh Patel hopes to represent the saffron party in Phulpur, a constituency in south-eastern Uttar Pradesh whose most illustrious MP was India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

In nearby Bihar, voters in the parliamentary constituency of Araria and the assembly constituencies of Bhabua and Jehanabad elected new lawmakers Sunday, the same day on which the Uttar Pradesh bypolls were held.

In Araria, the BJP’s Pradip Singh and the RJD’s Sarafaraz Alam will both hope to succeed Mohd Taslimuddin, whose death made a by-election necessary. Alam is Taslimuddin’s son.

The RJD will hope to retain the Jehanabad seat, which fell vacant after the death of Mundrika Yadav.

And the BJP, on its part, wants to hold on to Bhabhua.

Here, too, the death of the incumbent MP, Anand Bhushan Pandey, made a mid-term election necessary.
