According to the reports, the women, Rita Sarkar, her husband and her in-laws often tortured her for dowry and told her that they’ll sell her kidney if she don’t get the money. “Around two years ago, I began suffering from acute stomach ache. My husband took me to a private nursing home in Kolkata, where he and the medical staff told me that I would be fine after removing my inflamed appendix through surgery,” she said.

But her pain persisted, or rather intensified, after the operation. “My husband warned me not to disclose the surgery in Kolkata to anyone. I begged him to take me to a doctor to treat the pain, but he ignored me.”. Rita was taken to a North Bengal hospital when she and her relatives got to know that her right kidney was missing.
