South Mumbai feels the heat at 36°C, 6 degrees above normal

Date:

A day after a significant rise in maximum temperature was recorded both in south Mumbai and the suburbs, temperatures rose further on Wednesday.

The Colaba weather station recorded a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius, 6.4 degree Celsius above normal, while 35.8 degrees Celsius was recorded at Santacruz, which was 5 degree Celsius above normal.

The highest maximum January day temperature in 2017 was 36 degrees Celsius (Santacruz), and 2016 was 37.3 degrees Celsius. The all-time high January day temperature was 37.4 degrees Celsius, recorded in 2006.

Officials from the weather bureau said that the maximum temperature was expected to drop by a degree Celsius on Thursday, but will remain at the 35 degree Celsius mark till Monday. “Warm easterly winds are increasing temperatures during the day, and the sea breeze are setting in very late since Tuesday.

The same phenomenon is expected throughout the week, leading to high day temperatures,” said Ajay Kumar, scientist, India Meteorological Department.

The minimum temperature was almost a degree Celsius below normal at 16.4 degrees Celsius at Santacruz and 1.6 degree Celsius above normal at Colaba, which recorded 21 degrees Celsius. The city’s air quality continued to remain in the ‘moderate’ category.
