The Jammu and Kashmir police said on Friday that a Pune-born woman has been detained and questioned following intelligence reports of the presence of a woman bomber in the Valley ahead of Republic Day.
Events marking the Republic Day across the State passed off peacefully amid heightened security.
ADGP, Kashmir, Muneer Khan said the woman was arrested on Thursday evening.
“Fortunately, after working on all the leads we were able to apprehend the suspect late on Thursday night. We are still verifying whether or not she is a suicide bomber,” said Mr. Khan. The authorities have approached the Maharashtra police “to establish her credentials”.
“We are talking to our sister agencies. Only after proper investigation we will be able to come to any conclusion,” said Mr. Khan.
Police sources said the woman was held from south Kashmir’s Awantipora area. She was with her mother when she was arrested. “Her associate was also taken into the custody,” said a police official.
The arrest came two days after the State intelligence agencies issued an alert saying “there was a string input that an 18-year-old woman may detonate explosions inside or outside the venue of the Republic Day function in the State”.
Following the alert, women pedestrians and drivers were frisked and questioned ahead of the Republic Day.
Meanwhile, all Republic Day functions passed off peacefully in J&K.
