Making it a habit; Sensex, Nifty close at new height again

Key benchmark indices, led by index pivotals Reliance Industries (RIL), TCS and L&T, logged strong gains on first trading day of the week. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, gained 286.43 points or 0.81% at 35,798.01, as per the provisional closing data. The Nifty 50 index gained 71.50 points or 0.66% at 10,966.20, as per the provisional closing data. Firmness in global stocks supported gains on the domestic bourses. Both the Sensex, and the Nifty, scaled record high levels on intraday as well as on closing basis.

RIL surged after declaring good Q3 result after market hours on Friday, 19 January 2018. Axis Bank gained after announcing robust Q3 result during market hours today, 22 January 2018. IT stocks gained.

The Sensex gained 316.12 points or 0.89% at the day’s high of 35,827.70 in late trade, a record high for the barometer index. The index rose 33.10 points or 0.09% at the day’s low of 35,544.68 in early afternoon trade. The Nifty gained 80.40 points or 0.74% at the day’s high of 10,975.10 in late trade, a record high for the index. The index fell 13.30 points or 0.12% at the day’s low of 10,881.40 in mid-morning trade.

Trading for the week began on a positive note triggered by firmness in global stocks with Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank leading gains. A bout of volatility was seen in morning trade. Volatility continued in mid-morning trade as stocks regained strength soon after trimming gains from higher levels. Indices held firm till afternoon trade. Indices extended gains in mid-afternoon trade. The Sensex and the Nifty rallied in late trade to scale fresh record highs.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was provisionally up 0.63%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index provisionally up 0.78%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was positive. On the BSE, 1,572 shares rose and 1,320 shares fell. A total of 185 shares were unchanged.

The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4914.24 crore, lower than the turnover of Rs 5497.58 crore registered during the previous trading session on Friday, 19 January 2018.
