Weight loss may not always be happy news;watch out for these health signals

Weight loss and staying fit is the norm for the day. Around the world, people are putting in efforts through proper diet, exercises and a corrective lifestyle to ensure that health is protected and taken care of. Yet, there are times when a person needs to be vigilant about the reasons why weight loss happens much more rapidly than what is required. These issues exist and need our attention.

Though losing or gaining only a few kilos throughout the year is normal, but according to many studies, if you lose more than 5 per cent of your body weight in less than six months with no change in your diet and without any physical activity, it’s time to see a doctor. Losing a drastic amount of weight cannot be without any reason. A significant weight loss that doesn’t have an obvious reason can be a serious health condition.

We list down some reasons which can be underlying causes for weight loss.

THYROID: An overactive thyroid also called hyperthyroidism can lead to unexplained weight loss. It does not show any visible symptoms and that is why is difficult to detect. Symptoms to look out for are increased hunger, palpitations, feeling hot all the time and not getting enough sleep.

GUT DISEASE: Celiac disease is an autoimmune problem related to gluten which can lead to weight loss without any other noticeable symptom apart from diarrhoea. This disease causes a problem with pancreas which produces enzymes that aid digestion. Feeling of nausea after eating fatty food and stomach ache are symptoms of celiac disease.

DIABETES: The onset of diabetes can lead to weight loss. During diabetes, your body sucks energy from your muscles which leads to sudden weight loss.

DEPRESSION: One major side effect of clinical depression is weight loss. Though depression can also lead to weight gain but weight loss is more common. r

CANCER: Many types of cancers or stomach tumours and ulcers can lead to inflammation and malabsorption of nutrients which can ultimately lead to weight loss. Tumour and inflammation in bowel, colon and oesophagus can also lead to weight loss

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that makes one’s appetite suffer and thus, leads to weight loss. This condition can also cause inflammation in your gut which could lead to nutrient malabsorption and lead to weight loss

So, watch out for these symptoms and head to the doctor for a check-up if you notice them. Not all weight loss can be happy news after all.
