As the country celebrates her birthday on social media and with speeches and talks, the birth memorial of the valorous Rani of Jhansi, Laxmi Bai, lies neglected and in utter darkness and despair.
Laxmi Bai, one of the leading figures of the Indian Uprising of 1857, was born on November 19, 1828.
Her memorial in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi city has had its electricity cut off for a week now. The electricity department claims that the connection was illegal and hence it was disconnected.
Some activists say that they have appealed to the Commissioner, the District Magistrate and the municipal body but have got no response.
Meanwhile, the caretaker of the memorial said, “Since the memorial comes under the city Municipal Corporation, we reached out to the concerned authorities but no one responded.”
The memorial was commissioned by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department (UPTD) before being handed over to the municipal body.
