Whether its Bollywood or Hollywood, we have always been enamoured with glamour and glitz. The enigma of Gone with the Wind or the waltz of Peter Swayze, the action of Sholay or the beauty of Madhubala – each and every thing is immortalised in our hearts forever. This week we look at how we can quirk up our homes with style and drama of the 60mm.
We took to the lanes of Hauz Khaus and found quaint shops selling archaic antique goods. From the 40’s telephones, artifacts in brass and wood, miniature scotch bottles, locks from the bygones to antique lights and lamps. But what excited us the most were bundles of clearly printed, almost original posters of movie stars, Grammy winners, rockstars’, pin-up bands etc.
It was like walking down memory lane. Bands and famous Bollywood movie stars from our growing up days were in abundance. Shahrukh khan, Elvis Presley, John Lennon to the eternalised eyes of Audrey Hepburn and the drop dead looks of Clarke Gable. And yes, there was Cold Play and Beatles’ (in some never seen before poses) and Bob Marley (you can’t help but whistle to Buffalo Soldier). Bruce Springsteen with his sneakers hung on his Guitar is a must for any avid fan.
Sound of Music, Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady, The Seven Year Hitch, Sherlock Holmes…. the list is endless! Each in its unique signature style, swag and character intact. There was also the classic Tintin, the first Coke advert, and the Vespa scooter.
If you are a movie buff, grab the old classics, frame and nail them on your walls. It can create magic and bring a dull room alive and add colour to your study or library. Put up a Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash or Freddie Mercury along with a lamp in a corner, a sink in sofa and loads of books and your room is completely characterised. A lounge can be more than just a TV. Let the movie posters take centre stage. A black n white framed poster in a corner of the bedroom can be mesmerising.
So, think different and unique. Move beyond the ritualistic interiors that are a bore now. It’s time to revamp and to imagine.
