Rohini P. Bhajibhakare has become the first woman collector in Salem district of Tamil Nadu since last 70 years. 32-year-old IAS officer is the daughter of a small farmer from Maharashtra and she was previously posted as the Additional Collector (Development) and Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency in Madurai.

The first woman collector of Salem says that she cleared the civil services exam without any private coaching. “Seeing the difficulty my father faced inspired me to become a government servant and focus on public service. I studied in a government school and did my engineering in a government college,” she added.
She completed her academics from a government school and she admits that the teachers of the government schools are good, however, there is a lack of infrastructure. Keeping in mind her experience she aims to deal with problems related to education in the district. She also conducted few surprise visits to government hospitals to check the situation prevailing there.

She also said that she will be focussing two main issues of sanitation and health in the assigned district. “With the threat of dengue apparent, there is a need for additional focus on sanitation. That will be my first priority” she said.
