The lady who saved Panchkula

Being on the top level of bureaucracy, there are some serious situations that arise which have to be dealt with a calm and composed manner by them. The recent chaos created by the miscreant followers of Ram Rahim in Panchkula did some serious damage to the government and private property and claimed the lives of 32 people after their self-styled godman Ram Rahim was convicted for rape. The unruly protest by his followers was almost as brutal as the Jat agitation of 2016 in Haryana.

Deputy Commissioner Gauri Parasher Joshi’s presence of mind and courageous decision not only managed to save the life of herself but also avoided the much worse aftermath which could have taken place in such mob violence.

DC Gauri Parashar was caught up in a serious situation and she was left alone surrounded by mobs of hundreds after the police fled the spot realizing that they were outnumbered, according to the reports.

Being surrounded by a mob of hundreds with just one single PSO on her side, 36-year-old IAS officer 2009-batch from Odisha cadre faced the wrath of the Dera supporters. Not only she was wounded by stone pelting, her clothes were also torn in the brutal mob violence.

It was her training in the Naxal-hit region that helped her to deal with the situation and she managed to get to her office where she decided to hand over the out of control situation to the Army.

Her decision helped to save the situation from deteriorating and she said “It was the concern for the city, which was on the boil, that remained uppermost in my mind,”

Despite being wounded, she once again went to the field to review the situation in her district. With torn clothes and blood stains on her clothes, she decided to go home instead of a hospital as she felt that the hospital was already overstretched to look after her minor injuries.

Her sheer presence of mind and decision making skills sets an exemplary example for all the bureaucrats.
