Passengers at the JFK airport on Friday were delayed for an interesting reason that didn’t include inclement weather as a reason. According to reports, around 40 Diamondback Terrapin turtles had made their way onto the runway at one of the world’s busiest airports and caused short delays for a number of flights.
Every year, around this time, the turtles make their way to the sandy shores near the airport to nest and lay their eggs. A lot of the times, the turtles wander onto the runway. While the turtles were safely removed, some flights were delayed but affected passengers were not too annoyed with the delays.
Im taxiing in my plane because there are turtles on the runway. Perhaps the only excuse I have ever found endearing.

A source very familiar with the situation tells me a plane is currently stopped on the tarmac at JFK due to turtles on the runway.

Currently stuck on the JFK tarmac for the only acceptable reason a pilot has ever announced. https://t.co/nOONzAEeFU
