Two Hundred and One senior bureaucrats appointed to keep eye on GST

The Central government has appointed 201 Joint Secretary Level Officers to closely keep an eye on the effects and working of GST on the daily basis in all the districts.

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said on Tuesday that the government is banking on consumer education and market competition to keep prices under check.

“So far all reports are positive. There are many products on which prices have been reduced, these are the reports that are coming… (But) we have to keep our fingers crossed, it is too early to celebrate,”  he said on the performance of GST in the country.

Cabinet secretary, PK Sinha held a meeting with top government secretaries to brief the Joint Level secretaries and on monitoring over the availability of essential commodities and retail price trends under GST. The Central Committee comprising of 15 members will give the weekly report to the Cabinet Minister.

The districts have been clubbed together into 166 clusters, which will be looked after aligning them with the administrative divisions of the Central Revenue Department.
