Smriti Mandhana scores century as India secure comfortable win over West Indies

Date:

Impressive all-round performances from the Indian women’s cricket team helped secure a comfortable win against West Indies as well as their second consecutive win in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup in England. India won the match by seven wickets.

The Mithali Raj-led team opted to field first and West Indies took the early advantage, scoring 69 for the loss of one wicket after 19 overs. However, strong performances from India’s spin bowlers, Poonam Yadav, Deepti Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Ekta Bisht helped restrict the reigning World T20 champions to a modest 183 for 8 in 50 overs.

The Indian team backed up their bowling performance with a confident display of batting, with Smriti Mandhana securing her first century of the tournament, scoring 106, after nearly missing out on the first game against England. Mandhana picked up the Player of the Match for her confidence behind the bat. Captain Mithali Raj continued her consistent performance and nearly scored her eighth consecutive half-century but was caught out at 46.

The Indian women’s cricket team’s World Cup campaign has gone off to a flying start as the team is now placed second in the tournament standings, level on points with Australia but trailing on net run rate. The team will hope to continue their impressive run of form to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
