Authorities arrest Singapore’s first woman citizen in suspicion of Islamic radicalism

Date:

A 22-year old Singaporean woman suspected of trying to join the radical ISIS has been arrested by Singapore authorities, according to a statement released by authorities.

The arrest is the first documented case of women being radicalized by the terrorist state. According to the Singaporean Ministry of Home Affairs, the woman had been radicalized since 2013 and regularly spread ISIS propaganda on social media. The woman also sought to find a militant husband in Syria to marry.

South East Asia has been experiencing an onslaught of Islamist State threats as citizens become radicalized, posing a threat to domestic security. In May, rebels linked to ISIS attempted to take the city of Marawi in Mindanao, Philippines. Singapore and its neighbours have also increased intelligence cooperation in an effort to identify and detain people suspected of having links with ISIS.
