Meri Pyari Bindu is the story of a pulp fiction writer( Abhimanyu aka Bubla ) and his love/fixation with his childhood friend cum neighbour turned lover turned neighbour (Bindu) ,from his own perspective.
I am not trying to twist my words .. just trying to express in the simplest possible way, the twisted love story. And I say “his”perspective because we never knew what the girl’s perspective was or for that matter, even the writer’s.
I must say that the movie begins on a very interesting note.The first half keeps us pretty engrossed and happy with lot many things.. vibrant Kolkata charm, the style of story rendition, the flash back in bits and pieces, the humour, Bindu’s breezy introduction. The teenage infatuation,lack of clarity of relationships, ambitions etc ..things seem pretty relatable as far as the present young generation is concerned.
But post interval , the writer begins to loose the grip. Suddenly we realise that the breeziness, the free spiritedness,the fickle mindedness of the so called most important character of the story is not backed by any substantial depth of understanding. In other words, Bindu’s character seemed very superficial.The writer didn’t seem to bother to reflect on what Bindu was actually inside. Everything was from Abhimanyu’s point of view.
The to and fro of flashbacks eventually gets tiresome and the story starts meandering endlessly.
The music was one of the saving graces of the film. It had a fair mix of peppy and melodious numbers. Apart from the good points listed above which make the first half a pleasurable watch, performances by Parineeti and Ayushmaan was also a positive point. I found support cast very cute and apt. They added buoyancy to the story.
At one place in story, the hero says ” Love stories with happy endings sell well”. I wish the writer had taken his own line seriously because he messed up a possibly good film by a pretty senseless and stretched out ending.
Abhimanyu’s woe was why nobody ever taught people to get over love. Well.. by the end of the movie , we genuinely wished someone had helped him out on that one.
Overall, the movie with a run time of 119 min could be a one time watch if you come prepared to tolerate the last 19 minutes.
