On this women’s International Day, the very word ‘women’ brings to mind is tenderness, care, love and protectiveness and the Bollywood has shown women in all phases, of course, there have been roles where the woman of substance has emerged from the chrysalis, thanks to strong-willed film-makers who have broken fresh ground. Read on for the list of favourite woman-oriented flicks:
1. Mother India (1957)
This will always be the first women-oriented movie that comes to your mind while talking about women-centric movies. It made a powerful impact, representing India in the aftermath of Independence, being the pioneer in reinforcing the internal strength of a woman who rises like the Phoenix from the ashes of circumstances.
2. Lajja
The Rajkumar Santoshi film focused on Women empowerment. The story revolves around three women who face problems because they are women, it covers many social issues like female infanticide, sexual harassment, pregnancy before marriage and dowry.
3. Dor
This fairly recent one by Nagesh Kukunoor not given its due warmed the cockles of my heart witnessing female ties. The pathos interwoven as one woman connects with another is touching. Gul Panag’s character infuses into the colourless life of widowed Ayesha Takia is moving. The scenes where the latter breaks into full-throated laughter in the company of the former is a precursor of things to come. Recall the scene where the latter’s paternal grandmother urges her to leave for a better world. This scene has etched itself forever in my mind as giving strength to the protagonist’s wings to fly towards self-redemption.
4. Queen
The story revolves around a Delhi-based Punjabi girl, who’s fiance calls off their wedding one day before it. After that, she goes alone to her honeymoon, meets new people spends time realising that she doesn’t need any man in her life to stay happy.
5. Kahaani
Directed by Sujoy Ghosh this story revolves around a pregnant lady who comes from London to Kolkata to find her missing husband.
6. Jai Gangaajal
This movie released on 4th march focuses on Priyanka Chopra who is a lady IPS and gets posted in the town of Lakhisarai. The story revolves around her bravery, honesty and hard work towards knocking down corruption and slowly bringing the jungle raaj to an end.
7. Pink
This movie stars Tapsee Pannu, Amitabh Bachchan, Angad Bedi and Piyush Mishra.
