He joined INC and India’s struggle fr freedom after coming to India in 1914. His return to his motherland is celebrated as the Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas.

He organised the Dandi salt march, which rolled over as a big movement for India’s freedom struggle.
He participated in the round table conference organised by Britishers in London to come to a solution for freedom of India.
He was equally popular among masses and the major leaders of the freedom struggle.
He tried his best to get a peaceful negotiation with Britishers on India’s independence. He is seen with the Governor General Lord Mountbatten and his wife in the picture.
He was assassinated while coming out of the prayer halls of Birla temple by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948. The nation remembers his journey and his ideas till date. Every City has an MG road. Many schemes like MGNREGA are named after him.
