A producer, director and actor with more than 70 films to his credit. Bollywood’s this Show Man has an equally enviable list of recognitions to his name, including nine Filmfare Awards, the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987.


Kapoor was even twice nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Awaara (1951) and Boot Polish (1954). Time magazine ranked his performance in Awaara as one of the top 10 greatest performances of all time.

He went on to become the first in Indian cinema to have his heroines showcase their bodies in sensuous frames. Kapoor not only managed to convince everyone for some skin show, but was also appreciated for the aesthetic portrayal his leading women.



Barsaat is a 1949 Bollywood film directed by Raj Kapoor. The film stars the famous duo of Kapoor and Nargis as well as Prem Nath. It was also the introduction of actress Nimmi in her first film role. Barsaat was one of the first major hit films directed by Kapoor.

Sree 420

Sree 420 is a 1955 Bollywood film directed, produced by and starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis. The number 420 refers to Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, which prescribes the punishment for the offence of cheating; hence, “Mr. 420” is a derogatory term for a cheat. Raj Kapoor’s first heroine and arguably his favourite, Nargis set the screen on fire whenever she was teamed with the Show Man.

Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai

Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai is a 1960 Hindi film directed by Radhu Karmakar and produced by Raj Kapoor. The film stars Kapoor, Pran and Padmini in lead roles. This was the first directorial venture of Karmakar who had previously been cinematographer for many of Kapoor’s films. The film was declared “Hit” at the box office.

Mera Naam Joker

Mera Naam Joker is a 1970 Hindi drama film directed by Raj Kapoor. The screenplay was written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. This film was the debut of Rishi Kapoor. Mera Naam Joker is a film about a clown who must make his audience laugh at the cost of his own sorrows. The film is considered to be one of the lengthiest films of Indian cinema.

Jagte Raho

Jagte Raho is a 1956 Bollywood film directed by Amit Maitra and Sombhu Mitra, produced by and starring Raj Kapoor. The film centers on the trials of a poor villager (Kapoor) who comes to a city in search of a better life. However, the naive man soon becomes trapped in a web of middle-class greed and corruption.

Chori Chori

Chori Chori is a 1956 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film directed by Anant Thakur, with music by Shankar Jaikishan and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. The film is an unofficial remake of the American film, It Happened One Night. Bhagwan Dada, Pran, David, and Johnny Walker have character parts.


Diwana is a 1967 Indian Bollywood film directed by Mahesh Kaul. The film stars Raj Kapoor, Saira Banu, Lalita Pawar in pivotal roles.The film made under the Anupam Chitra production banner had music by Shankar-Jaikishan with lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra.

Chhalia is a 1960 Indian Bollywood drama film directed by Manmohan Desai.It stars Raj Kapoor, Nutan, Pran,[4] Rehman and Shobhna Samarth. Raj Kapoor plays his stereotyped “simple guy with a heart of gold” role yet again.The story is loosely based on the “White Nights” written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky but is focused on the issue of estranged wives and children in the aftermath of Partition.
