Sikh techie beaten up in California alleged for hate crime

California: In a shocking incident in California, a group of men brutally attacked a Sikh American, by knocking off his turban and chopping down his unshorn hair with a knife.

Maan Singh Khalsa, 41, an IT professional in California, was riding home on September 25 when a group of men in a car threw a beer can at his car. Screaming that his hair be cut off, the men stretched his head out, and cut a fistful of his hair with a knife, reported Mr. Khalsa.

The occurrence prompted the civil rights organisation to command a hate crime investigation into the incident.

“Khalsa drove away from the scene but the men followed him and assaulted him through his open car window, knocking off his Sikh turban and hitting his face repeatedly,” according to a statement from The Sikh Coalition, the nation’s Sikh civil rights organisation.

Khalsa said there were “five to six white men in their late 20s to early 30s” who ruined him and three of them then hit him physically.

Maan Singh Khalsa has lacerations to his fingers, hands, eye, and teeth.

The Sikh Coalition has written a letter to the Richmond Police Department and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office on account of Mr. Khalsa, prompting officials to lead a hate crime enquiry and undertaking in the matter.

“The attackers caused physical injuries and deep harm when they targeted my Sikh faith,” Mr. Khalsa said in a press statement.

“I urge a thorough investigation so we can address the tide of violence and bigotry in this country.”

Sikh Coalition Legal Director, Harsimran Kaur urged police officials to thoroughly examine “this hateful attack” on Maan Singh Khalsa.
