Pension of freedom fighters hiked by 20 per cent

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) The monthly pension of freedomfighters, including those who were incarcerated in Cellularjail in Andaman Islands or suffered outside British India, wastoday hiked by around Rs 5,000 each. The decision to give 20 per cent enhanced pension to allcategories of freedom fighters, their spouses and dependentswas taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet headed by PrimeMinister Narendra Modi. The revised scale of pension has taken effect from August15, 2016 and the revised total amount of pension will be takenas basic pension for the respective categories of freedomfighter pensioners for calculating Dearness Relief, anofficial statement said. The existing Dearness Relief system based on All IndiaConsumer Price Index for Industrial workers, which was so farapplicable to freedom fighter pensioners on annual basis, isbeing discontinued and replaced by the Dearness Allowancesystem applicable to central government employees twice ayear. This will be termed as "Dearness Relief", the appropriateterm in case of pensioners, it said. Pension for freedom fighters in the category ofex-Andaman political prisoners and their spouses has beenenhanced from Rs 24,775 to Rs 30,000 per month. Pension of freedom fighters, who suffered outside BritishIndia, has been raised from Rs 23,085 to Rs 28,000 per month. Pension of other freedom fighters, including those whowere members of Indian National Army (INA), has been raisedfrom Rs 21,395 to Rs 26,000 per month. Addressing the nation on the 70th Independence Day fromthe Red Fort, the Prime Minister had announced a 20 per centhike in the pension for freedom fighters. Central freedom fighter pensioners and eligibledependents under ‘Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension’ will getenhanced pension with effect from August 15, 2016. All freedom fighters and spouses and dependent parents,eligible daughter pensioners of deceased freedom fightersdrawing pension under the Swatantrata Sainik Samman PensionScheme, 1980 would be benefited by the decision. So far, 1,71,605 freedom fighters and their eligibledependents have been sanctioned pension under the scheme. At present 37,981 freedom fighters and their eligibledependent pensioners are covered under the scheme. Of these,11,690 are freedom fighters themselves, 24,792 are spouses(widows/widowers) and 1,490 are daughter pensioners. PTI ACBNABRT
