Mercedes owner arrested

Kolkata, Sept 21 (PTI) The owner of the Mercedes thatwas involved in an accident with a scooter at Hazra crossingon Sunday leading to a rampage inside a housing complexfollowing a youth’s death in the accident, was arrested today. Varun Maheswari, the owner of the Mercedes E-250, hasbeen arrested by Homicide Section of the Kolkata PoliceDetective Department this afternoon, a senior police officersaid today. It was learnt that Maheswari, during questioning todayclaimed that he was driving the Mercedes when the accidenttook place at the crossing in the southern part of the city at2.55 AM on Sunday, he said. However, CCTV footages on the crossing had shown awoman behind the wheels. "We are talking to him and trying to find out whatactually happened on that morning. We are corroborating hisversion with the CCTV footages on the road," he said. Maheswari, in his early 20s, is a resident of Dhakuriain south Kolkata, while the Mercedes was registered inthe name of a company having its office on AJC Bose Road. Avijit Pandey (22), the rider of the scooter succumbedto his injuries at the hospital while pillion riders – RamdevYadav (22) and Mithilesh Yadav (25) were discharged aftertreatment. Eleven persons were arrested by the Kolkata Policefor rampaging nearly 70 vehicles inside the parking lot of theresidential complex on Panditia Road assuming that theMercedes, after the accident had gone inside the complex. CCTV footage inside the complex showed that over120-150 locals barged into the premises and rampaged thevehicles. All the 11 have been charged under sections dealingwith unlawful assembly, rioting, damaging government propertyand stealing. PTI SCHMM
