‘Majuli’s largest river island stauts to help heritage bid’

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI) With Majuli in Assam being declaredthe largest river island in the world in the Guinness WorldRecords, Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma today said therecognition will enhance its bid to get world heritage status. "With this recognition, Majuli in Assam enhances its bidfor @UNESCO world heritage site status," he tweeted. Majuli, an island in the Brahmaputra river, toppled Marajoin Brazil to bag the coveted title by Guinness World Recordsearlier this month. Majuli covers an area of around 880 sqkm but due tofrequent flooding in the Brahmaputra river, it suffers heavyerosion. It is estimated that Majuli, which is home to around1,60,000 people, has lost around one third of its area overthe last 30-40 years. Majuli is the nerve centre of neo-Vaishnavite culture andhas been trying for the World Heritage Site status. PTI MPTIR RGGVS
