Central government appointed Urijit Patel as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on Saturday. Renowned economist and consultant Urjit Patel will replace Raghuram Rajan and will take charge on 4th September 2016.
“The appointment has been made on the recommendation of the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary. The Committee undertook an extensive exercise to suggest a panel of names to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC). For the first time, a systematic approach and an objective mechanism have been put in place,” said Appointments Committee of Cabinet in a release.
Patel, is currently serving as Deputy Governor in the RBI since 2013. He has Doctorate degree in Economics from Yale University, M. Phil. from Oxford University and obtained BA from London School of Economics.
