Child marriage stopped in Haryana

Jind, Aug 17 (PTI) A child marriage was stopped today bychild marriage prohibition department and police in Sangatpuravillage here, an official said. While the groom is 22 years old, the bride was found to be 15 years old studying in class X, the official said. Acting on a tip-off, the child marriage prohibitiondepartment stopped the wedding procession in Sangatpura whileit was preparing to go to Dhani Goalpur village in Fatehbad. After counselling by the officials, the parents of thegroom gave a written undertaking that they will follow thelaw and allow their son to marry the girl before she reacheslegal marriageable age, police said. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, marriageof a boy below 21 years of age and a girl below 18 is anoffence and attracts a 2-year imprisonment or Rs one lakhfine, or both.
