Facebook to stream videos from app to TV via AirPlay and Chromecast

Date:

In another innovation, social media giant, Facebook, is testing a new feature which would allow Android and iOS users to stream Facebook videos to their television sets.

According to a report by Marketing Land, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that the company has started testing the ability for people to stream videos to their TVs that are connected to an Apple TV or Google Chromecast.

At the moment, Facebook’s AirPlay and Chromecast support is pretty basic. Users can minimise the in-app video player to scroll through their news feed, while videos play on the TV. Users can only set one video at a time to stream to an Apple TV. The spokesperson added, “We’re currently testing updates to the Facebook app that provide better support for streaming videos from the app to your TV via AirPlay and Chromecast.”

Additionally, the company is also testing a new WiFi service in India called “Express WiFi”. The new program will allow users to purchase data from service providers in India in order to access the internet. However, the company has not disclosed the names of service providers that it is in discussions with.

According to a report by BBC, Facebook mentioned in a statement that the tests were being carried out with “multiple local ISP partners”. The company said, “Express Wifi empowers local entrepreneurs to help provide quality internet access to their neighbors and make a steady income. Working with local internet service providers or mobile operators, they’re able to use software provided by Facebook to connect their communities.”

It also added that the project is already live in rural India. The report added early this year, the company’s Free Basics internet service app was blocked by India’s telecoms regulator.
