7 DIY tricks for brushing off the heat

Date:

Summers without air-conditioners are indispensable, right? Wrong. Whether it is a power cut or bad finances, these do-it-yourself ploys will help you endure summers more chilled-out than you had imagined.

1. The combo effect: While a table fan alone cannot fight all that heat, but when it is put facing a bowl of ice, it can do wonders. Place the fan at an angle, so that it blows air directly over the ice, and what you will receive will be the combined effect of the two, a cool pleasant gush of air. It’s no less than an AC!

2. Wet your bedsheets: While in a totally different context it might not be very advisable, but wetting your bedsheet with some cool water before sleeping is a great way to tackle the not so cool summery nights. As we all have studied in school, that evaporation leads to cooling, the same logic applies here, as the dampened sheets will slowly evaporate their wetness, the cooler your bed will be.

3. Blow it out the window: By placing a table fan in front of a window, can help blow away the hot air from the room, welcoming the cooler breeze in, from outside.

4. Reflect upon it: You can put cheap light reflecting sheets on your windows, which reflect away much of the harsh sun rays, helping you keep the house cooler.

5: Make it spin the other way ’round: You can set your ceiling fan to spin counter-clockwise for the summers, as it creates a wind-chill-breeze effect, which as the name suggests will create a chill breeze in your room for you to enjoy, despite the sun shining brightly outside the window.

6. Get exhausted: Turn on the exhaust fans in your bathroom and kitchen, as they will help push out the hot air that has accumulated in your living space, leaving you with a cooler freshness.

7. Grow-green: So here’s one more great reason to support afforestation. Growing some nice thick bushes around the house can act as a natural shelter-shade from the scorching heat. Similarly, tall trees around the property is another way to block the sun from aiming strong beams of hot rays at your home.
