Srinagar: After a fight broke out at Srinagar’s National Institute of Technology, or NIT, over India’s loss in the World T20 semi-finals match against West Indies, the institute was shut on Friday morning.
According to a local student, non-Kashmiri students were irked by the celebrations when India lost to West Indies and a clash broke out.
On Friday morning, the students gathered to protest about the ruckus. Sources said the university authorities called in the police and shut down the campus to control the situation.
Hundreds of students assembled in the compound and started stone pelting at the police who retaliated with baton charge and tear gas shelling. There were allegations that the police had used tear gas on the students.
