India and Pakistan — two arch rivals. When they clash on the borders, there’s a political tension gripping both the sides. When the clash on the 22-yard, hearts brim with passion and a sense of patriotism sweeps over. Therefore, it is but natural that the run up to any such high voltage encounter would be full of controversies. That is especially true when it comes to a World Cup clash.
Much before the Indians locked horns with their counterparts from the other side of the border, there were many stories that provided fodder to the media and the consumers of any India-Pakistan feed. It all began with the Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh categorically refusing to host the encounter, which was originally slated to be played in Dharamshala. Eventually, that loss became Eden’s gain.
After that issue got resolved, there were many issues with the Pakistan team landing in India. Their government had concerns about security in India and it was only after they were assured, did they finally land in India. Then we thought everything would be okay.
But no. We’re talking about the run up to an India-Pakistan World Cup clash. So, no.
In this timeline, this could have easily featured as a great peace-initiating bit of news. But sadly, it didn’t. Shahid Afridi made a brilliant gesture by saying that he’s received a lot of love, but just took a level further saying that the kind of love he’s got in India is not something he’s got even back home in Pakistan. And that was the beginning of a long battle that only Afridi will have to fight.
To ease the surmounting tension, this little gesture from Virat Kohli was just about perfect. During their training session at the Eden Gardens, Mohammad Amir, who happens to be a fan of Kohli, bumped into him. Amir asked Kohli for a bat and the latter happily obliged.
Only to thrash the living daylights of his team later, much to the glee of Indian fans.
What we don’t know is there are many interesting things that happened immediately before and after the encounter.
Big B and Big misreporting
All of us know how patriotic Big B is. Which explains the fact that he flew down to the Eden to begin proceedings with his heart-warming rendition of the national anthem. But then, some sections of the media have this urge to create controversies out of nothing, even if it means fabricating news. Now, this clever chap spread the false news that Big B had charged Rs 4 crores for the national anthem stint, after which CAB president Sourav Ganguly clarified that it was utter nonsense, as Big B had paid for his tickets, his accommodation and everything else, amounting to Rs 30 lakhs and had refused to take any money when offered.
Now, it’s stale news that much-in-love couple Anushka and Virat have decided to move on with their lives post their highly publicised split. Turns out, as per reports, the actress sent a congratulatory message to Virat Kohli, who was the star of the show. Sweet!

Now, that’s not the end of it. Much to the sadness of Baloch and more to the people who wanted Pakistan to win just for her to keep her promise of stripping, India beat Pakistan to pulp, thereby shattering all hopes of the model strutting her stuff. That didn’t go down too well with her though. Check it out.
India-Pakistan matches. Heights of passion, heights of everything else too.
