Why you need to save your child from these Facebook groups

A popular Facebook Group known as ‘Teen Dating and Flirting’ has been the talk of the town for the past few days; reason being that one of its members has gone missing. The group is just like many other hundreds of teen groups that are popular on Facebook among teens.

These groups are more about rating than dating. Teens post their selfies, photographs which are suggestive in nature. Often, there are adults in such groups who tend to take advantage of these unsuspecting teens.  Although such groups have been active on Facebook, the group genre came to light recently when a 13-year-old Nicole Lovell was reportedly bullied by the group, which was weeks before her disappearance.

On January 1 she posted a selfie with a caption “cute or nah”. A majority of responses which she got were brutal. This incident sparked a wave of outrage and concern from parents, teachers and advocates.

It is not very clear that why Facebook allows such groups to exist?  A number of such groups openly flout the site’s community standards. Routine harassment and hate speech are quite prevalent in such groups, and some of these groups have some pornographic material in them too. What is more surprising and alarming is the fact that it is not clear whether the subjects of those images are adults or teens.

One reason why such posts on these groups are not banned is because no one flags these posts, because of which they never come to Facebook’s attention. Facebook depends on heavily on its user policing in controlling and taking off inappropriate content off the site, but if the users themselves are not reporting such posts, there is little that Facebook can do.

Why such groups on Facebook are becoming parents’ nightmare is because these groups increase teens’ anxieties. Teens also expose themselves to potential harm when they share their photographs with some unknown stranger. You don’t know who is on the other side of the computer.

The fact that Nicole Lovell frequented such groups many are asking that why Facebook is not taking any action against them?
