“Selfie” takers delay evacuation during Make in India fire

According to reports, a massive fire broke out on the stage of Make in India Week at Girgaum Chowpatty where a function was being held during the Maharashtra Night. A huge fire broke out during the traditional dance performance of Lavani.

The entire stage was in flames in a matter of minutes which led to an immediate evacuation. CM Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Governor Vidyasagar Rao and film personalities like Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were evacuated immediately.

“We were in the programme. Extremely sad. The police and the fire department did an excellent job. They evacuated everyone quickly, so there was no stampede. However, there were people who were taking selfies which created a bottleneck…people were pouring out and these guys were taking selfies,” said an eyewitness.

Around fourteen fire tenders reached on spots and tried to douse the flames. So far no casualties have been reported. After the fire broke out all the backstage performers were also rushed outside immediately.
