NaMo addresses Indian diaspora in Malaysia

Kuala Lumper: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumper during his two nation visit to Malaysia and Singapore.

The Prime Minister here remembered t he Indian martyrs of the Second World War. Modi said that he was prepared to work with the Malaysian Government to build a war memorial to the fallen soldiers at the site of Battle of Kampar in Perak.

Prime Minister Modi, who was addressing the Indian community here, paid a special tribute to Puan Sri Capt. Janaky Athi Nahappan, who served as deputy to Capt. Lakshmi Sehgal.

“It was in the regiment named after yet another icon of India’s war of Independence, Rani of Jhansi. On behalf of every Indian, I also honour all the unnamed and unknown Malaya-Indians, who laid down their lives so that free India could rise,” he said.

Prime Minister also announced to name a cultural centre in Kuala Lumpur after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
“I will name our cultural centre here after Subhas Chandra Bose. Independent India owes a debt of gratitude to Malaya-Indians. Thousands of your forefathers came forward to join Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Indian National Army,” Prime Minister Modi said.

Speaking about Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Modi said, “We share colonial history. The glory of India’s freedom struggle was written in part by Malaya Indians. Gandhi ji did not visit Malaysia but he touched your hearts. And you came together to build a memorial in his name.”

“There are few things that can be as moving as these. A homage in silence expressed in action and built into living memorial. And it is my privilege that we will install Gandhiji’s bust at Gandhi Memorial hall,” he added.

Reaching to the Tamil expats in Malaysia, PM Modi said India is not confined to territory, but exists in every Indian.

“I’m delighted to visit Malaysia. It’s a true pleasure. For me, India is not confined to its territory. India exists in every Indian, in every part of the world,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi, who was addressing the Indian community here, also invoked Father of the Indian Nation Mahatma Gandhi in his speech.

Pitching about the economy, PM Modi said, Indian community in Malaysia has made immense contribution to make the nation an economic power house and India is committed to give fruits of a modern economy.

“India is the fastest growing major economy. I know, you feel proud of it. We produce doctors and engineers who serve the world and we are making products that are entering global market,” Prime Minister Modi said.

Further, pitching on the rising terrorism around the world Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised on the need to delink religion from terror.

Prime Minister Modi, who was addressing the Indian community here, said the only distinction that must be made is between those who believe in humanity and those who don’t.

“We must cooperate to combat this (terrorism). When I say the world must come together, it also means no country should promote terrorism. World must ensure that countries do not use or promote terrorism – no sanctuaries, no funds, no arms. We have to make sure Internet does not become a recruiting ground,” he said.
