The only topic of conversation in Chennai this week has been the incessant rain. Everyone is wishing for the rains to stop and the sun to shine, even as the city reels from this month’s second depression.
Normal life has, of course, been thrown out of gear. Many localities in the city and its suburbs are inundated. Residents of these places have to wade through knee-deep water, often mixed with sewage, that hasn’t yet drained from the roads. Water has entered many houses in low-lying areas. Residents of some suburbs are even talking about snakes, leeches and assorted bugs entering their homes!
Residents are not venturing out unless it’s unavoidable, while workers and office goers have to brave the bad weather. However, commuting poses a challenge as only public transport systems like buses and local trains are functioning. Only a few private autos are operating(and demanding exorbitant rates for even short distances), while cab drivers are staying off the roads. Vehicle owners are also stuck in stagnant water and traffic snarls at every turn.
Power outages are common, sometimes lasting for up to five-six hours. Many residents have been stocking up on essentials, in light of more showers predicted by the Meteorological department.
The city police and municipal corporation workers are out in full strength, diverting traffic, dealing with flooding and fallen trees and so on. Cops are seen standing in knee-deep water regulating traffic movement on flooded roads. Their dedication is commendable.
Meanwhile, several holidays have been declared for schools and colleges and end-semester exams are being rescheduled by universities. Some university campuses are also flooded!
Hard times sometimes bring out heart-warming gestures as well. Citizens are creating voluntary initiatives to assist civic authorities’ relief efforts. Some residents have opened their homes to those whose houses are inundated, and are spreading this message on social media. Let’s hope such solidarity helps Chennai weather this storm.
