Russia’s Kulizhnikov, American Bowe set speed skating world records

Date:

Russia’s Pavel Kulizhnikov and American Brittany Bowe set world records to capture the men’s 500m and women’s 1,500m at the speedskating World Cup stop in Calgary, Canada, on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Kulizhnikov clocked a time of 34.00 seconds to beat the previous record of 34.03 set by Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada in 2007.

Bowe, who improved her own 1,000m world record on Saturday only to see it fall immediately to compatriot Heather Richardson, had the consolation of clocking a world record 1:51.59 to win the 1,500m.

She improved on the previous world record of 1:51.79 set by Canada’s Cindy Klassen at Salt Lake City on November 20, 2005.
