Paris and PS4: Playing and plotting?

Date:

Playstations aren’t just for playing. Apparently, they are also used to plot terrorist attacks, for example the deadly Paris massacre.

If a Belgian government minister is to be believed, the IS militants might have used Playstation 4S to plot the attacks, as communications made through PS4 are virtually impossible to track. In fact, they are even more difficult to track compared to Whatsapp messages.

It seems that PS4 users can send messages through the PlayStation Network online gaming service, use voice-chatting or even communicate through a specific game.

PlayStation’s IP-based voice systems are difficult for investigators to monitor compared to traditional forms of communication such as mobile phones and computers.

Using Super Mario coins, players can plot an attack. In fact, they can write messages (disappearing bullets) and neatly execute their devious plots.

According to documents leaked by National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden in 2013, the NSA and CIA actually embedded themselves in online games like “World of Warcraft” and “Second Life,” fearing that terrorist or criminal networks could use the virtual worlds to communicate secretly.

It isn’t clear whether the PS4 was used to plot the attacks, but what swings suspicion towards it is the fact that a games console was among items seized by Belgian police as they raided the houses of those suspected of being involved in the attacks.
