Laugh Out Loud this Diwali

Date:

New Delhi: Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most popular festivals celebrated in India. Spanning over five days, this festival is a unique blend of worship, colours, food, fireworks and clothes. It is the festival that is said to bring happiness and good luck in the lives of the elderly, young and children every year.

For some, Diwali is the time to burst crackers and let the Gods know they’re happy and making merry. For others, it’s their best shot at getting hold of some relaxation. For some, the noise of the firecrackers fires up their nerves.

A movie is the best choice for the second and third set of people as it soothes the mind and is also a perfect way of escaping the noisy celebrations. For those who are going to spend the day at home,

NewsMobile brings you some of the best comedy films you can enjoy this Diwali.

Padosan (1968)

The title ‘Padosan’ (girl next-door) brings a smile to every face. Produced by Mahmood Ali and N C Sippy, the film is one of the best entertainers of all times. ‘Padosan’ is based on a Bengali story,

‘Pasher bari’ written by Arun Chowdhury and adapted in Bengali in 1952, in Telugu as “Pakkinti Ammayi” in 1953, in Tamil as “Adutta Veetu Penn” in 1960 and again in Telugu as “Pakkinti Ammayi” in 1981. When unworldly-wise Bhola (Sunil Dutt) realises that he is of marriageable age, he comes to the city to live with his maami (aunt Dulari) who is separated from her aging, feudalistic, thakur husband (Om Prakash). He is pleasantly surprised to find that maami’s padosan (neighbour) is a bubbly, beautiful, college student, Bindu (Saira Banu).

He sets his heart on her and decides to woo her. When he sees that she is deeply interested in music and is taking lessons from a Tamil teacher, Master Pillai (Mehmood), he seeks the help of his friend Vidyapati (Kishore Kumar), an accomplished singer and a romantic at heart, who heads a local drama troupe.

With brilliant performances and enduring songs, ‘Padosan’ can be watched any number of times. The film immortalises Kishore Kumar and Mehmood as master entertainers.

Gol Maal – 1979

The film Golmaal can only be categorised as one of the best light-hearted comedies ever seen in Hindi cinema.

Ram Prasad (Amol Palekar), a young chartered accountant and his sister Ratna, are orphans living in Bombay. One morning, an old family friend, Dr Kedar, comes to visit him with information about a very well-paid job being advertised by Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), the owner of Urmila Trading Corporation, who happens to be Dr Kedar’s personal friend also.

Bhavani Shankar, who believes that a man without a mustache is a man without character, is also against any of his employees indulging in recreation of any kind. When Ramprasad is caught by his boss at a soccer match, he has to invent a twin brother, the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad, to save his job. When Bhavani’s daughter falls in love with the clean-shaven

Laxman Prasad, and insists on marrying him, Bhavani insists she should marry Ramprasad. Things take a whacky turn. A fake mother and a hilarious chase are what follow next.

Andaz Apna Apna – 1994

There have been very few great comedy films in the history of Hindi Cinema. Andaz Apna Apna happens to be one of them. The film is based on a very simple story of two poor young men (Aamir and Salman) who dream of becoming rich by marrying a millionaire’s daughter (Raveena).

Aamir and Salman Khan try their best to outwit each other and woo Raveena. Both individually, without the knowledge of the other decide to take matters into their hands and find ways to get rich quickly.

Chaos and acrimony result when both find each other at loggerheads, and win the hand of the daughter of multi-millionaire Ram Gopal Bajaj amidst considerable upheavals. But, Shyam, the twin brother of Ram, decides to do away with Ram and assume his identity and thus take over the estate of the Bajaj family.

White Chicks – 2004

Two FBI agents, Kevin and Marcus (Shawn and Marlon Wayans) go undercover to bust a drug dealer, but their sting fall apart. Their boss gives them a new assignment to escort two hotel heiresses, Brittany and Tiffany Wilson, to the Hamptons.

The FBI has received word that there is a plot to kidnap the sisters at the Hamptons. As they drive from the airport to the Hamptons, the girl’s little dog goes out the window, and causes them to have a wreck. The two girls end up with cuts on their faces in the wreck.

Brittany and Tiffany take a stand, and refuse to go to the Hamptons looking like this. If they don’t go, the kidnapping plot will not occur. Kevin and Marcus will fail again, and probably lose their jobs. They decide to disguise themselves as the Wilson sisters and catch the kidnappers.

Anchorman – The Legend of Ron Burgundy – 2004

Marking the directorial debut of Adam McKay, former head writer for Saturday Night Live and founder of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, Anchorman is set during the 1970s and stars Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, San Diego’s top-rated news anchorman.

While Burgundy is outwardly willing to adjust to the idea of females in the workplace – even outside of secretarial positions – he certainly doesn’t want his own job challenged. Keeping that in mind, it’s no wonder that the arrival of Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), an aspiring newswoman, is, in Ron’s eyes, not the studio’s most welcome addition.

After Veronica pays her dues covering so-called female-oriented fluff pieces (think cat fashion shows and cooking segments), the ambitious Veronica sets her eyes on the news desk; more specifically, on Ron’s seat behind it. Not unpredictably, Ron doesn’t take the threat lightly, and it isn’t long before the rival newscasters are engaged in a very personal battle of the sexes.

Hangover – 2009

A blowout Las Vegas bachelor party turns into a race against time when three hung-over groomsmen awaken after a night of drunken debauchery to find that the groom has gone missing, and attempt to get him to the alter in time for his wedding.

In 48 hours, Doug is scheduled to walk down the aisle, effectively ending his reign as a rowdy bachelor. Realizing that this is their last blowout with their best friend, Doug’s groomsmen organize a Sin City bachelor bash he’ll never forget. The next morning, the groomsmen come to in their Caesar’s Palace suite to find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby tucked away in the closet. Unfortunately, Doug is nowhere to be found.

With no memory of the previous night’s transgressions and precious little time to spare, the trio sets out in a hazy attempt to retrace their steps and discover exactly where things went wrong. Will they find Doug in time to get him to the wedding back in Los Angeles, or will his bride experience the sharp sting of disappointment when she walks down the aisle to discover that her future husband is nowhere to be found?
