Modigliani sells for $170.4 million in New York

Date:

A sumptuous nude by Amedeo Modigliani broke a world record at auction for the Italian artist, selling for $170.4 million at Christie’s in New York on Monday.

“Nu Couche” or “Reclining Nude,” painted in 1917-18, sold after a frantic nine minute bidding war. It depicts a naked woman reclining on a luscious red couch and blue cushion.

An iconic pop art painting by Roy Lichtenstein also broke a world record at auction for the US artist, selling for $95.37 million.

The price reached for “Nurse” — a shocked looking blonde with sexy red lips — smashed the previous record for a Lichtenstein, set for “Women with Flowered Hat” in 2013 for $56 million.
